Between the Rocks

ceramics, plaster, wood, metal, acrylic paint on canvas

With this project, I blend paint, plaster, ceramics, and found objects to create imagined characters and worlds that investigate the interplay of shape, color, and form. My inspiration comes from diverse sources—ranging from the surreal realms of fantasy animation to the microscopic beauty of scientific imagery. I am particularly drawn to the organic shapes and patterns found in nature, whether it’s the delicate intricacy of plant life, the rugged textures of rocks, or the strange symmetry of insects.

When I was establishing the idea for this project, focused purely on aesthetics and mood, and let the rest of the environment develop as I worked. I began with the concept of usable art and brought some of these characters to life in the form of wheel-thrown vessels. As I continued shaping my project I strayed away from the usable and started to make them into more purely aesthetic objects, changing their shapes and positioning, how much they resemble humans, insects, or non-human animals.

This project pays tribute to my inner child, constructing a world populated by humanoid insect characters and otherworldly landscapes. These creations merge the familiar with the fantastical, transforming the natural into the uncanny. Through my work, I explore contrasts—such as humor and play against the strange and unsettling—and invite the viewer to step into this universe, where imagination and reality blur. My hope is that they’ll engage with these characters, not as passive observers, but as active participants in a world that challenges the boundaries of what’s natural and what’s possible.
